A Soldiers Diary
Diary extracts of Captain George Downey (by kind permission of Mr. Robert Alexander Saunders of Nepean, Ontario) This unique day-to-a-page diary, written in a meticulous hand, was kept by Captain George A. Downey, M.C. who served with the Canadian Field Artillery from December 1915 until March 1919. In this capacity he witnessed a great deal of the war in the front line, including a great deal of the war in the front line, including action at the Somme, Vimy Ridge and Passchendaele. He has left a fascinating record of his experiences. Note: The writer often makes reference to going up to the "O.P." (Observation Post, also known as the old "Old Pip," closer to the front line) and the "W.L." (The wagon lines, to the rear). George Downey survived the war to become a successful Civil Engineer and businessman. He died in Toronto in 1964.
